Lollipopping — Complete Pruning Guide

Lollipopping removes all lower growth that will never receive adequate light, directing the plant's energy entirely into top-quality upper buds. When done correctly it significantly improves yield and quality.

The Logic of Lollipopping

Cannabis plants have limited energy to distribute. Lower branches and bud sites that receive less than 75% of your light intensity produce "larfy" (loose, airy, underdeveloped) buds that add weight but little quality. By removing this growth before or at the start of flower, you redirect all energy to the top canopy where buds will develop fully. Less total weight, but dramatically better quality and marketable buds.

What to Remove

Remove: all growth in the bottom third of the plant before flipping to flower, any branch that does not reach within 30–40cm of the light, and small bud sites (popcorn buds) on main colas that will not develop fully. Leave: all main colas with established bud sites, healthy fan leaves (they are solar panels — do not over-strip leaves).

Timing

Begin lollipopping 1–2 weeks before switching to flower, or at the flip itself. This gives the plant time to heal before the energy of flower is redirected. Do not lollipop heavily after week 3 of flower — removing large amounts of leaf in mid-flower stresses the plant at a critical development phase.

Defoliation During Flower

Beyond lollipopping, a lighter round of defoliation in weeks 3–4 of flower (removing large fan leaves blocking bud sites) can further improve light penetration and airflow. Remove only leaves blocking multiple bud sites. Never remove more than 20% of leaves in a single session during flower.

Quick Tips

  • Take before and after photos to track the impact on your bud development.
  • High-stress pruning combined with lollipopping is best for photoperiod plants — give autos minimal intervention.
  • Growers with flat ScrOG canopies benefit most from lollipopping — everything below the screen can be removed cleanly.
